So you want to live like Paris Hilton. Internet porn scandals and gal pal dramas aside, it can’t be a bad life. America’s tabloid darling is strictly A-list, from parties to pooches, and photographed every step of the way, with no sign of the attention diminishing. How does she do it? More importantly, how can you do it? We asked the experts how to turn a Hong Kong wannabe into an It-girl.
The Look
Blonde, skinny, and nearly naked are the defining characteristics of Paris Hilton’s look. She’s known for her tiny dresses and even smaller dogs. To attract Paris-esque levels of attention, international fashion designer and consultant Eve Roth Lindsay, owner of Savvy Style, advises you find your own look. No flair for fashion? Don’t worry, Lindsay will do it for you. She provides personalized consultation services for colour, style and makeup, plus seasonal fashion updates.
Strictly This Season
For all you socialite wannabes, Lindsay advices wearing the latest fashion. But there are rules. “At the beginning of every season, clear out your wardrobe except for vintage collectibles, such as a Birkin Hermes bag, or a Chanel watch. You also need at least 100 pairs of shoes; Manolo Blahnik’s are essential because without those, there’s no way you can become a socialite,” She says.
This season, Lindsay suggests wearing beautiful fabrics: velvet, metallic and brocades. “We’re moving away from the whole bohemian/gypsy look and towards the Russian look with beautiful embroidered fabrics that evoke a sense of the rich and regal,” she explains. “The Alfred Hitchcock ladylike look and skirt suits are also very much in fashion.”
Be original, she says, don’t just open a magazine or go to a designer store and copy the look exactly. Instead, find a muse. “All fashion designers use muse – someone whom you admire from any era. The key is to pick a look that you admire and use it as a guideline,” Lindsay says.
And develop a signature look by repeating something again and again. “Paris Hilton, for example, is always seen in big sunglasses. That’s her look,” Lindsay says. “You never see her in a skinny pair of Ray Bans.” The key to being fashionable without being a victim is to pick one item that really stands out, and wear it with other pieces that are in fashion but not super trendy.
